Smart phones, Smart cars, Smart homes…what about SMART PEOPLE?
Seriously, we are smart people. But what the heck is IoT? Bhavesh Patel, Director of Marketing and Customer Support, put it in the simplest terms for me to understand. He said “At its most basic, the Internet of Things (IoT) is the widespread usage of any sensing device that has a chip and an IP address and can communicate (source).” Well, gee, why didn’t you say that in the first place? So what is it really?
Do you remember the first time, not too long ago, when you walked into a bathroom and the lights came on? That was cool! Now we can have multiple IoT devices in our homes that not only turn on the lights but can also adjust the room temperature based on the number of bodies that are in that room. We have cars that detect a still object in front or behind the moving vehicle and communicate to the other chip that can apply the brakes.
The IoT seems endless…so many options, so many things they can do for us! In fact, there are more Internet connected devices than the world’s population. “Ok, Google…What was the world’s population in 2012?” 7.043 billion people. Why 2012? Because it was 2012 when IoT became larger than the world’s population.
The future of IoT is bright and BIG. In the workplace, we are seeing IoT put to use more and more in efforts to conserve power and water, collect data for analytics, and automate processes all with network-connected equipment. But are we creating an environment that removes the human-factor completely? Children that will grow up never learning how to drive a car because the cars drive themselves. Who never have to do something as simple as adjust the thermostat because it automagically does it for them. Weird. Microsoft Word does not consider “automagically” a misspelled word.
We’d love to hear from you! How have you put the IoT to use? What are your big plans?
